6.3. Starting with pullets

Pullets are adolescent chickens that are under a year old, and are close to reaching their egg-laying phase, meaning that you don't have to put in nearly as much work before you get to reap some dividends (just for reference, a hen is a chicken that is laying eggs, while a pullet is one that hasn't started yet). Raising chicks from eggs or shortly after hatching is a lot of fun, and very rewarding, but it's also a lot of work. Starting with pullets is definitely recommended for beginners, as it will give you a better feel for what managing a backyard flock is like before going through all the time and effort of raising chicks. When you start with pullets, you don't have to worry about incubating, hatching, or brooding—you just go straight to backyard chicken raising.

Where you get pullets depends on where you live, but the best place to start looking is a place like craigslist.com. Unlike chicks, pullets are too big to go through the mail, so you should get them locally. Many farmers will sell extra pullets, and they'll post them on local websites or put up notices on the boards in poultry shops. This is a great way to get birds to start with (you can also tell the sex of the bird by the time they've reached this stage, which is nice).
